Assisted Living Activities for Seniors

Hovi Care has experience in organizing activities for seniors and people with special needs since 1989. Over the years, we have gathered best practices for senior activities from our operating units in Finland, Singapore, and Indonesia, and based on these, we have formed an understanding of what are the best assisted living activities for seniors.

In the article below, we share our observations and experiences on activities for assisted living residents:

  • what kinds of activities for seniors are beneficial for the rehabilitation and well-being of clients keeping in mind the principles of holistic care
  • what to consider when organizing a successful and engaging senior activity session
  • how to take into account the different levels of functional abilities of clients in the activity session
  • what is the importance of understanding the life history, needs, and wishes of older people
  • how to involve staff in activities and how to organize activities in assisted living so that they become an integral part of every day

Hovi Care’s care philosophy is based on the findings of the Finnish FINGER study. The study investigated how the progression of memory disorders can be slowed down or perhaps even stopped. All our activities are based on the results of this study, so that every day includes:

  • an element of physical rehabilitation,
  • cognitive rehabilitation and
  • social well-being

Activities play an important role in assisted living, as our goal is always to make every day meaningful for our clients. Being together also creates a sense of safety and trust, which are important for the well-being of the elderly.

Also, making our activities transparent on social media also plays an important role in building trust with our clients’ families and loved ones. When relatives see that our clients are happy with us, they can entrust their loved ones to our care with confidence.

Stimulating activities in assisted living against boredom in elderly

Boredom can easily surface when daily routines become repetitive. At Hovi Care, we believe the best way to prevent this is by offering meaningful activities for elderly that gently activate, inspire, and bring joy to our senior clients. To do this well, we take the time and effort to learn each person’s preferences, strengths, and life story using the Own your Life -storybook, because truly motivating activities always begin with understanding the individual.

We have noticed, that shared experiences often encourage participation more naturally than the solitary ones. That’s why our daily activity programs are designed to bring people together in ways that feel safe, enjoyable, and suitable for different levels of functional ability. Some clients may participate actively, while others might prefer to observe or listen. That is fine too. Every role is valuable, and every person is included.

Through our daily work, we have found that certain types of activities consistently create positive moments and are easy for older adults to join:

  • Music moments – Whether it’s karaoke, singing together, or listening to familiar melodies, music often awakens memories, emotions, and connection with the others.
  • Thoughtfully selected films – Movies with personal or nostalgic meaning can spark conversation and create shared experiences that resonate with the group.
  • Nature-inspired activities – Nature observation, bird watching, or simply enjoying calming outdoor sounds often support relaxation and encourage even quieter clients to take part. Everyone has a connection to nature.
  • Quizzes and trivia – Light quizzes offer gentle cognitive stimulation and are enjoyable for clients regardless of their activity level.
  • Friendly competitions – Simple and positive contests build togetherness, lift the spirit, and add a welcome sense of excitement to the day.

When activities are designed with care, empathy, and professional insight, they enrich everyday life. Our goal is always to support well-being, nurture social connections, and create moments that truly matter.

What activities do elderly like?

Based on our long history with eldercare, we have prepared a list for activities that the elderly like. Over the years, we have noticed that certain activities remain consistently popular and continue to bring joy and engagement. These include:

  • Reading the news together, which helps residents stay connected with the world and often sparks meaningful discussion.
  • A variety of games, which appeal especially to residents who enjoy a bit of friendly competition. It can be Bingo or Mahjong, depending on the country.
  • Music activities, as some specific pieces of music can hold deep emotional significance for many. Take the national anthem as an example. It is important, however, to understand which types of music resonate personally with each individual.
  • Any conversation-enticing activities are wonderful for socializing, strengthening connections, and encouraging peer interaction.

While familiar favorites in activities are important, variety also plays a key role in creating enriching daily life. Introducing occasional surprises helps prevent routines from becoming too predictable and keeps residents curious and inspired. From time to time, it is valuable to explore activities that fall outside the everyday program, such as:

  • A client-led fashion show, where residents enjoy dressing in their favorite outfits and walking on the cat-walk.
  • Restaurant-style dining in the assisted living, with table service that brings a touch of elegance and special attention to mealtime.
  • Short excursions to nearby places, offering fresh experiences, changing scenery, and gentle adventure.
  • Longer outings by boat or bus, which provide a welcome change from daily routines and often become cherished memories.

At Hovi Care, we have a proud tradition of organizing at least one trip each year for our residents. Some journeys even take us abroad. Although these excursions require thoughtful planning and dedicated effort, they are immensely meaningful. Our clients look forward to them with great anticipation and continue to share memories of these experiences long after returning home.

How to entertain an elderly person at home?

Keeping a loved one active at home can sometimes feel more challenging than in a group setting. Unlike assisted living or day activity programs, where clients naturally encourage each other, home environments do not offer the same social motivation.

Still, home also provides unique advantages that can make activities easier and more enjoyable when approached thoughtfully.

Why home is better setting for engagement:

At home, several factors create a comfortable foundation for meaningful activity:

  • A familiar environment – Being surrounded by known spaces helps your loved one relax and focus more easily.
  • Personal insight – As a family member, you understand your loved one’s preferences, dislikes, and history better than anyone. This makes it easier to choose activities that feel natural and enjoyable.
  • Easy access to materials – Any tools or equipment needed for hobbies or games can be kept readily available and in good condition.
  • Flexible timing – Not every day starts the same way. If your loved one is tired in the morning or had a poor night’s sleep, you can simply try again later when they are more receptive.

These small advantages often make activity at home not only possible but deeply rewarding for both of you.

Helpful Tools and Approaches for Home Activities

Below, we’ve gathered methods and tools that we have found particularly effective when engaging loved ones—especially when you participate together.

  • Watch good old movies on Netflix. Maybe not the full movie at once as the senior might not be able to concentrate for so long.
  • Simple card games for seniors can get them excited especially if they are competitive
  • Scrapbooking for seniors helps with reminiscence and is a good conversation starter.
  • Photo Album Reflections where you browse old photo albums together.
  • Trivia & Quiz Moments can be both fun and cognitively stimulating.

What are some stimulating games for elderly?

The most important step is selecting activities that match your loved one’s current functional ability. When a task feels too difficult, frustration can quickly replace motivation. When it feels achievable, even small successes build confidence and enjoyment.

Equally important is choosing activities that reflect the person behind the task:

  • What did they enjoy in childhood or youth?
  • What kinds of games, puzzles, or hobbies have they liked?
  • What type of games do they dislike? For example, some people find puzzles interesting while some cannot stand them.

Understanding these details helps create moments that are meaningful and supports rehabilitation and wellbeing.

Here are a few categories of activities to inspire ideas you can try together:

  • Great sit-down games for seniors which always work are Bingo, Dominoes and word games. Uno and Rummy works well too.
  • Memory game for seniors supports reminiscence. The classic is picture cards laid face down are turned over two at a time to find pairs. “Name That Tune” Music Memory Game is also very easy to arrange and Reminiscence Cards can take the discussion to the next level.
  • Funny party games for seniors could for example be Picture-Based Storytelling where you use illustrated cards to inspire short stories or memories. Short question-and-answer games also spark great conversation and reminiscence

Activities done together supports social rehabilitation

Some activities can certainly be enjoyed alone, but the most meaningful and uplifting moments often come from doing things together. Because loneliness is closely connected to a lack of social interaction, we especially encourage activities that create shared experiences and genuine connection.

Family members often play an important role in arranging activities, and their involvement is truly valuable. At the same time, it is equally important for older adults to have opportunities to spend time with peers, people who share similar life stages, memories, and perspectives. Conversations with others of the same age are different from those shared with family. Companionship with friends that is both comforting and enriching.

Unfortunately, many older adults have fewer chances for this kind of peer interaction, especially because lack of mobility makes visiting harder and for those, who live long, their friends might already be dead.

Creating opportunities to rebuild these old connections and create new ones supports social well-being, strengthens identity, and helps seniors feel seen, and part of a community.

  • Book Clubs are a great way to find friends who share similar interests.
  • Memory Café can be a cozy moment with coffee or tea and a predefined discussion theme
  • Cultural Theme Days in which you select a country and enjoy Music from the country, photos and a small snack related to the country
  • Baking or Cooking Together where you prepare something simple together: cookies, fruit salad, pancakes. The cooking often becomes more meaningful than the result.

Fun activities for elderly people in nursing homes

Growing older should never mean enjoying life any less. In a nursing home environment, the responsibility for creating meaningful, enjoyable days naturally falls to the care team. Our role is to offer enriching experiences, encourage gentle activation, and ensure that every resident has the opportunity to participate in ways that feel comfortable to them.

A joyful old age is built on three foundations:

  • a safe and reassuring environment, where one can “Own their life”
  • attentive support for activities of daily living (ADL), and
  • fun activities for elderly people that bring purpose and pleasure.

At Hovi Care nursing homes across Finland, residents are offered physical rehabilitation, cognitively and mentally stimulating programs and opportunities for social connection every day. Each activity program session is designed to support well-being and create moments that truly matter.

For activities to be successful and genuinely engaging, several elements are essential:

  • Thoughtful preparation ensures that clients, especially those with cognitive challenges and possibly limited concentration, can stay focused without unnecessary waiting.
  • Enthusiastic participation from staff helps residents feel welcome, encouraged, and confident to join in.
  • Knowing each resident’s life story, preferences, and personal history allows us to choose activities that feel meaningful and familiar. That is what the Hovi Care’s reminiscence tool called My Own Storybook is for.
  • Understanding the culture and experiences of our residents’ generation enables us to create themes that resonate deeply—such as how holidays were celebrated decades ago or what foods were enjoyed during their youth.

At Hovi Care, we believe every day holds the potential for joy, connection, and discovery. Our mission is to make those nursing home activities possible, one meaningful activity at a time but at least one every day.

Assisted living activity calendar keeps seniors going

Thoughtful planning and careful preparation form the foundation of all meaningful activities. At Hovi Care, this begins with a well-structured assisted living activity calendar that outlines daily programs and dedicated time slots, ensuring that residents always know what to expect and when and can look forward to upcoming moments of engagement.

In designing our activities, we follow the principles of the FINGER study, which highlights the importance of supporting three key areas: physical rehabilitation, cognitive rehabilitation, and social well-being. When these elements are combined, research shows they can help slow, and in some cases even halt, the progression of memory disorders. This scientific grounding guides every aspect of our activity planning.

Over the years, we have identified several practices that help create a successful and predictable daily rhythm in our assisted living and nursing home units:

  • Nursing home activities are often placed around mealtimes, when residents are naturally gathered in the same space. This makes participation easier and reduces unnecessary transitions.
  • A designated leader is assigned for each activity in advance, ensuring clarity and continuity throughout the day.
  • The activity leader prepares thoroughly both mentally and with any needed materials or equipment, so the session feels smooth, inviting, and well organized. In many cases, it is also needed to reserve a specific time slot for the staff for this preparation.

By combining evidence-based planning with a warm, personal approach, we create daily moments that support health, spark joy, and strengthen connection—one activity at a time.
